FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH?
ERP solutions which originated in the 80’s and 90’s were developed to simplify the bookkeeping process and improve its accuracy. The goal was straight forward: Record “How much we spend” Discovering “Why we spend” was then unsuccessfully attempted through reports that broke costs down into cost centres .
In the maritime ERP world of today, dinos are still alive and reproducing!
But hasn’t the ERP ice age come to an end?
Surprisingly, even the most recent maritime ERP solutions have taken this bookkeeping-centric design, hoping that “flavour of the month” technologies might offer a solution, rather like dinosaurs dressing-up… At Ulysses Systems CMMS design started from maintenance. Purchasing and accounting were seen as supporting functions from the beginning, not vice versa. Why do we need this expensive part so often? Why can this pump run so many hours without maintenance? How much will we be spending maintaining our assets in the future? These questions were built into the Task Assistant’s design which is why today the TA is a benchmark for maintenance systems in the maritime industry. We believe that a slow but consistent mind-set shift in this direction is valuable for the entire industry as the conversation shifts from “flavour of the month” technologies to high-ROI features and real value creation. The ERP ice age has finally come to an end!
